Does fasting make you lose weight? These scientists explain how
A team of Chinese and American scientists has discovered a method to lose weight that is based on fasting and which obviously should only be done with medical advice. Let’s see what it’s about.
DOES FASTING LOSE YOU LOSE? HERE ARE DIETS BASED ON FASTING
You have often heard that fasting makes you lose weight. But this concept is often simplified, so that many people try to fast without a criterion, and either don’t lose weight or even gain weight because they compensate later. There are currently many dietary strategies that use fasting to lose weight.
For example, the various types of intermittent fasting, from the 8-hour diet to the dinner cancellation to the warrior’s diet to the eat-stop-eat , where a one-day fast is followed by a day of normal nutrition.
In addition , researcher Jason Fung has often talked about the fact that fasting makes you lose weight and reduces the risk of metabolic syndrome by helping the immune system. Finally, how can we not mention Dr. Longo’s fasting-mimicking diet ? All these dietary strategies are based on a fasting schedule or drastically reducing calories for a few days or, again, avoiding eating at certain times of the day.
FASTING LOSS ALSO IN THE LONG TERM ACCORDING TO SCIENTISTS
And let’s get to the news. A team of scientists from the Universities of Shanghai and San Diego has discovered that there is a type of fast that not only makes you lose weight quickly , but that, in the words of the researchers, is safe, works better than a normal low-calorie diet and even allows you to maintain long-term results.
To test their method, they took a sample of 45 normal-weight, adult people and subjected them to a 5-day “water fast” . What does it mean?
It means that for 5 days these subjects drank only water and nothing else, did not touch food or take other drinks.
This means that they have been subjected to a fasting ketogenic diet, that is, they have reached a state of ketosis due to not having eaten, and not only for not having introduced carbohydrates. In 5 days, participants lost an average of 4.5 kilos, decreased blood sugar, cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure and body mass index. They also had important immune improvements.
There is a problem, however, and not an insignificant one.
FASTING MAKES YOU LOSE BUT IT’S NOT FOR EVERYONE.
Although the scientists said this method works for those with metabolic syndrome, the participants, more than half of them women, all had normal body weights and were healthy subjects. So they basically had no diseases.
Therefore this protocol has not been tested on overweight or obese subjects or on subjects with metabolic syndrome. In fact, in the study it is clearly stated that a 5-day fast is not recommended in patients suffering from dyslipidemia, i.e. high cholesterol and triglycerides. However, this is one of the basic conditions of those suffering from metabolic syndrome.
It may also be a safe method, but the point is that all subjects were under close medical observation. So there is safety as long as the subjects are healthy and with a normal body weight.
But none of these subjects are an ideal candidate for weight loss.
