Does eating fiber make you lose weight?
Does eating high-fiber foods lead to weight loss and is it really necessary for health? Although some recent studies underline the importance of fiber in the diet, because they reduce calorie absorption, promote intestinal regularity, increase the sense of satiety, the slimming and health benefits of fiber are controversial.
One wonders if, for example, it is true that fibers help the good bacteria of the intestine, or on the contrary they are not deleterious. If it is true that eating fiber reduces cholesterol, but at the same time the absorption of important nutrients, such as some mineral salts and some vitamins. In short: to what extent is eating fiber good and when can fiber be definitely bad? How many of you, eating more fiber as they say we should, experience problems with gastrointestinal pain and spasms, abdominal bloating, constipation? Here I will try to establish some points.
Are fibers useful for intestinal regularity and digestion?
Some experts point out that one of the characteristics of fibers, in general, is the fact that they are difficult to digest. A 2007 study by doctors Tan and Seow-Choen of Singapore , which appeared in the World Journal of Gastroenterology, explains how, while it is true that soluble fiber can reduce the absorption of cholesterol from food, it is also true that “they inhibit the activity enzymatic function of the pancreas and protein digestion, leading to a malnourishing effect “. The study, a meta-analysis of the studies done on the correlation between fibers and the risk reduction of colorectal diseases, establishes that fibers are not useful in this sense., and that while eating fruits and vegetables is helpful, a high-fiber diet should be prescribed very carefully, as should fiber supplements. The same thing for diverticulitis and irritable bowel syndrome: the benefits of a diet rich in fiber would not be scientifically verifiable according to the meta-analysis; hence, the advice to eat more fiber to reduce the problem of irritable bowel or diverticula or to reduce constipation would be a huge simplification, a commonplace.
Just like a cliché, fiber intake to combat constipation was analyzed by a couple of naturopaths . In their article, they explain that it is not true that constipation derives from a low-fiber diet, and that above all, eating more fiber does not improve intestinal flora or regularity. To do this, they cite studies subsequent to the 2007 meta-analysis : two studies from 2012, but also a study from 1989 that identified a correlation between fiber intake and longevity in patients who had suffered a heart attack. A higher fiber was associated with a lower longevity.Â
