Does dark chocolate make you fat?
Does dark chocolate make you fat? The answer is: it depends on how much we eat. Chocolate in general is a food with a high energy density, this means that, for the same weight, it is more caloric than medium or low energy density foods, such as pasta (about 350/360 calories per 100 g) and vegetables. or fruit (maximum 100 calories per 100 g). In fact, the calories of dark chocolate fluctuate between 500 and 600 per 100 grams.Â
Of these calories, depending on the variety, most are in carbohydrates (about 50% simple sugars), followed by fats (30 to 40%).
Therefore dark chocolate makes you fat if we eat it in quantities that exceed our daily caloric needs. If twenty grams bring about a hundred calories, we can eat it as a snack. If we exceed this quantity, we have to regulate ourselves with the meals of the day in order not to gain weight.
If we eat 100 grams, its caloric equivalent is more than a 100-gram plate of pasta topped with a simple tomato sauce.
It must also be said that the fats in dark chocolate are mostly of the saturated type , although most (about half) is stearic acid , a saturated fatty acid which however does not increase cholesterol, that is, it has a low power. atherogenic. The darker the chocolate, the higher the percentage of cocoa and consequently the percentage of fat increases and differentiates: for this you can find dark chocolate bars that slightly exceed 600 calories, while milk and white chocolate generally never exceeds 500 / 55o calories per 100 grams. Obviously, its antioxidant content makes it a nutritionally valid and indeed beneficial food for our health: however this does NOT mean that, just because dark chocolate is good for you, it does not make you fat if we exceed with consumption.
So dark chocolate is ok if we eat a piece of it even every day : if we eat more of it, perhaps for some special occurrence (such as Easter or other), let’s remember to reduce both sugars and fats for that same day, keeping instead normal proteins. For example, if I wanted to eat 100 grams of dark chocolate, I would have to remember to “cut” about 500 calories from carbohydrates and fats for that same day.
One idea would be to eat carbohydrates in only one meal and avoid them in the others, and also minimize seasonings
