Digestive enzymes and weight loss: is there a link?
Can Enzymes Promote Weight Loss? Is there really a link between digestive enzymes and weight loss?
Actually no. Looking at all the studies linking digestive enzyme supplements to weight loss, we have very little evidence from human samples. First let’s clarify what these supplements are.
DIGESTIVE ENZYMES AND WEIGHT LOSS
As you may know, enzymes are substances that accelerate a particular biological process. Without enzymes we could practically not live, because many chemical reactions would take years to take place. As far as digestion is concerned, these enzymes are substances present partly in saliva and partly in the intestine and pancreas.
They are amylase (for the digestion of carbohydrates), lipase (for the digestion of fats, these are found only in the intestine), pepsin (for the digestion of proteins) and various enzymes that have more specific roles: for example the sucrase enzyme to digest sucrose, or the lactase enzyme to digest lactose.
These enzymes are naturally present in the body, unless you have personal inhibitions in their production. For example, someone who is lactose intolerant does not produce enough lactase (or does not produce it at all).
In people suffering from irritable bowel and other digestive problems, supplementing with digestive enzymes can be helpful in improving digestion. Clearly if you suffer from intestinal problems, digestive enzymes can lead to weight loss or reduction of symptoms. For example, if swelling is reduced and regularity improves, I will indirectly lose that weight linked to the inflammatory state, which generally derives from swelling and water retention. But I’m not technically losing body fat.
In addition, supplements based on digestive enzymes improve the intestinal flora. And an increased production of good bacteria also leads to long-term weight loss.
So we can say that the link between digestive enzymes and weight loss is indirect, that is, it is the result of some benefits in the intestine that can then also lead to weight loss.
But above all, HIS CONTRARY is true. I know it’s a contradiction but I’ll explain everything on page two. ( CONTINUED ON PAGE 2 )
