College addresses weight loss methods to obese students
Bryn Mawr College , a girls’ school in Pennsylvania, ended up in the eye of the storm, causing scandal in America, for using sensitive data of its students, violating their privacy, so as to be able to send them emails inviting them to participate in a weight loss program : practically all the students with a high BMI (body mass index) received the exact same email inviting them to lose weight through a slimming and training program to lose weight, of which they could have a proof. Quite a mortifying thing, which was to say that the college had looked at each student’s data and found it appropriate to inform those who were overweight that they should lose weight for their own good, through a new fitness and nutrition program. In fact, the e-mail did not reach all the students, but only those with an above average body mass index, including a student who in the past had suffered from eating disorders and who threatened to take legal action. The text of the letter can be viewed here .
