What is blepharitis

Blepharitis is an inflammation of a microbial, parasitic or allergic nature, which affects the eyelids and its appendages. 

Symptoms of  cat and dog blepharitis

Blepharitis has several symptoms , all of which are easily recognizable:

• swollen and red eyelid;
• pain in the eyes; 
• eyes half closed from discomfort;
• frequent need by the animal to scratch with its paw (which can cause eye injury);
• serous exudation and crusts (typical in the case of bacterial blepharitis). 

Dog blepharitis: natural cures and remedies

If your dog has blepharitis, some natural remedies can be used. 

Chamomile , for example, has an antibacterial and analgesic action, useful for cleaning the dog ‘s  red eye. Just prepare an infusion, let it cool completely and use it with cold soaked cotton compresses to be used externally to the eye, in a gentle way and without rubbing.

Another remedy is Witch Hazel  which has an analgesic and anti-inflammatory action. Witch hazel can be used in the form of distilled water to make eye packs and washes

Bach flowers are also   useful in case of dog blepharitis. Using the Rescue remedy (two drops in a teaspoon of water) to clean the eyelid helps against infection.

Finally, nutrition also plays an important role , which should be based on lean proteins (chicken or fish), useful for improving eye health.  

Cat blepharitis: natural cures and remedies

Even for cat blepharitis, as for dogs, it is possible to resort to natural remedies. In fact, it is advisable to resort to: 

• Wash with Chamomile to clean the cat’s eyelids externally.
• Packs and washes with distilled witch hazel water
• Cleansing with  Rescue remedy : Bach’s flower remedy should be used in water. 
• A diet based on lean proteins, such as those of chicken and fish.
