Caloric and harmful foods to avoid at the buffet
Time for terrible parties, time for buffets. Yes, on many occasions we will find ourselves with a plate in hand, a hungry look, a bewildered expression and the worry of having to eat without wanting to gain weight. At least it was worth it! Often behind the buffets of aperitifs or standing lunches or dinners there is the danger of over-seasoned or poorly cooked foods by the hostess, who often uses the help of the local gastronomy to serve us dishes full of mayonnaise, or sugar or salt. I still remember the nightmare of certain Christmas lunches at an old aunt’s house. From Christmas Eve he prepared a tray of appetizers which he then trimmed until the first of the year: pate, Russian salad and canapes bought from the supermarket, cold cuts and dairy products dipped in cream, gritty bruschetta with various truffle sauces or artichokes or black olives, the same ones that dominate the shelves of every grocery store, even elaborate pickles, eggs stuffed with mayonnaise and little else. The delis of the supermarket refrigeration departments seem to be competing these days: it’s all cream, cooked ham, spoonfuls of starch, mayonnaise, frozen fish, margarine or very poor quality oil.
But over the years the buffet has been enriched with new and disconcerting variations with the excuse of brisk healthiness. You too try to distinguish what to put on your plate thanks to my simple list of horrors to say “no, thanks!”.
CALORIC AND HARMFUL FOODS TO AVOID AT THE BUFFET
Bridget Jones would not eat either:
– Russian supermarket salad: it is not even made with real mayonnaise and the vegetables contain sugar.
– vegan dishes: a way like any other to say that they are full of spelled cream, coconut milk, seitan. Read: sugar, fat, gluten
– gluten free dishes: only for celiacs who are suicidal. Rice pasta, corn salad, pastry made with NO rice flour. One bite and it’s diabetes immediately.
– bruschetta with sauces: it means A) stuffing yourself with bread B) stuffing yourself with very poor quality vegetable oils. Or do you think they put the cold-pressed evo in it?
– the rustici: they have the shadow of a reddish thing that is either tuna pasta (95 percent potato starch, five percent tuna) or frankfurters (I still don’t understand what it’s made of, certainly it’s not meat ), and a puff pastry that made love to the worst of margarines.
– finger food in small glasses: they are cremine with starch, cream, a heap of salt.
– fried food: croquettes, panzerottini, spring rolls, Ascoli olives. The fair of salt, rancid palm oil, hydrogenated fats, fake food.
– small pizzas and canapés: the glycemic index is very high, the carbohydrates so refined that they shine, each small pizza has the specific weight of a Neapolitan woman in the mass of bread dough. A woman, however, not a taste of pizza. And she is obese.
How to save yourself? Focus on food, the real one : even cured meats are fine for me, certainly dried fruit such as peanuts, but you prefer less seasoned vegetables, salads with legumes or cereals, crustaceans or molluscs, smoked salmon. And forget about those damn breadsticks!
