Origins of the Italian Bracco

The Bracco boasts ancestors already in Ancient Greece, as some texts include. His specific knowledge starts from his introduction to the Medici court in the Renaissance period, where the bracco was able to be appreciated for its qualities as a hunting dog.

During the last century it has come back into vogue, to accompany hunting trips but also as a companion dog, for its good character and its friendly appearance.

Morphology of the Italian Bracco

It belongs to the group of pointing dogs , slender, muscular and strong. It is a medium- sized dog , it can reach a height of 67 cm from the withers and weigh up to 40 kg. Skull and muzzle are in proportion, the nose is voluminous, the lips droop beyond the jaw, but does not drool excessively and the ears are long and pendulous.

The hair is short and shiny and the allowed colors are roan brown and white orange. The tail is very straight. The look is funny, a little sad, due to the conjunctiva and non-toned lips.

Psychology of the Italian Bracco

The Bracco Italiano is a very gentle, balanced dog. A but socializing and is suitable for family living , even with children. He is attentive and intelligent, quick to learn commands and habits, in fact he has a habitual nature . It is a working dog, therefore it needs to be able to carry out daily activities, which engage it and give it the opportunity to vent its innate sense for hunting.

However, his sense of smell could distract him and, if not controlled, move him away from home and from the owner in search of smells that attract him.

Care of the Italian Bracco

The life expectancy of the Italian Bracco is around 12 years. It is a so-called rustic dog, very resistant, but it can be subject to some pathologies: dermatological problems such  as dermatitis, dandruff, generally due to a too much protein diet, which must be treated, calibrated and customized according to the physical activity performed.

It can cause stomach torsion , so always pay close attention
to the time of the meal and adequate rest during the digestive phase. It is possible to prevent this unpleasant event from even fatal implications with an intervention to block the stomach.

If the Bracco is used for activities related to hunting, the practice of caudotomy , tail docking is allowed, in order to avoid dangerous
traumas and fractures during work. Particular attention is also paid to the ears which due to their conformation can be subject to bacterial infections if not properly cleaned.
