Monoclonal therapy to reduce body fat
There has been a lot of talk recently about the possibilities of treatment with monoclonal therapies. For example, it has been talked about for Covid, it is talked about for some types of cancer and for some disabling diseases such as migraines.
Monoclonal therapies in fact use specific antibodies, which attack only target cells or neutralize molecules responsible for particular inflammatory processes, such as signal molecules.
Therefore monoclonal therapy is in short a therapy that acts on the immune level.
But there is also a monoclonal therapy to reduce body fat.
And it would have given excellent results.
Let’s see what it is all about in this article.
MONOCLONAL THERAPY TO REDUCE BODY FAT
The study on monoclonal therapy to reduce body fat, published in the scientific journal Jama , was led by the team of Dr Heymsfield’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center.
The participants were all middle-aged people with problems of overweight and type 2 diabetes, men and women.
The basis of monoclonal therapy is the administration of Bimagrumab, an antibody solution that blocks the signaling activity of the ActRII receptor. Participants received treatment by injection once every 4 weeks in a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial.
RESULTS
Participants lost an average of 7.5 pounds of fat in one year of monoclonal therapy and gained over one and a half pounds of lean mass.
Monoclonal therapy in fact acts progressively. It therefore does not work exactly like a drug, precisely because it stimulates an adaptive immune response.
In addition, the participants received advice from the researchers to eat a better diet and combine physical activity with their routine, but they did not go on a controlled diet. Which is helpful in understanding how effective the therapy was. In fact, the placebo group, who took a placebo and only followed the advice, lost just over a pound in a year.
Considering that in one year those who received Bimagrumab had an increase in lean mass, a reduction in fat and an improvement in metabolic parameters, the therapy is promising.
CONCLUSIONS
Combined with a diet developed by a physician and customized to the patient, monoclonal therapy to reduce body fat could have great benefits.
However, already in the study we note that it is not free from even serious side effects. For example, there was a case of severe pancreatitis in the group that gave the injection.
In short, that of monoclonal therapy to reduce body fat could be an interesting and perhaps even solution to obesity and type 2 diabetes.
But further trials and greater research efforts are undoubtedly needed.
