What is hair loss in dogs?
Shedding in a dog is commonly called moulting. The moult is the physiological replacement of the hair . It is present all year round, but is particularly significant in two periods: in spring-early summer and in autumn.
In spring the whole undercoat “falls” and the dog lightens its fur to prepare for the great summer heat, in autumn it reinforces it with new hair and thick undercoat.
According to the breeds, the hair can have completely different characteristics : it can be extremely coarse or soft, wavy or straight, in tufts. The state of the coat is an important indication of good health.
A healthy coat is compact, not worm-eaten, shiny and without dandruff. The dog is not itchy and its skin is smooth, without scabs or pimples. Any alteration of the mantle indicates, on the contrary, that something is really wrong.

The health of the dog’s coat begins with washing and brushing the coat.
The dog that lives in an urban environment, especially in large cities with heavy pollution, will have a deposit of extremely toxic dust and particles on the coat which, if not washed away, can be ingested when the dog licks itself.
In this urban context , brushing is all the more important , not only to remove any plant residues or insects, but precisely to remove dust and toxic particles as much as possible.
It is a good habit to bathe the dog at least once a month , with suitable substances, do not wash the dog with shampoo and shower gel designed for humans. There are many shampoos suitable for different types of hair, to which the following natural healing substances can be added:
- Calendula TM 50 drops;
- Hamamelis TM 50 drops.
And the following Bach flowers:
- Crab Apple 15 drops;
- Star of Bethlehem  15 drops;
- Vervain (if there is skin inflammation) 15 drops.
Leave on for a few minutes before rinsing thoroughly.
In the final rinse phase, use a decoction made with equal parts of mallow , nettle , rosemary . A handful of each in two liters of water. Make a decoction and strain. With this infusion rinse the dog repeatedly. This remedy makes the hair shiny and decongesting the skin. However, the decoction is not suitable for white or very light hair.
At least once a week, during brushing, clean the surface of the entire coat with a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar diluted in a liter of water, rubbing well; then pass, in the direction of the hair, a damp deerskin-like cloth, or a wet hand, to increase the shine and remove the residual loose hair.
Nutrition is also important for the health of the dog’s coat :
- wheat germ oil from half a teaspoon a day for small dogs to one teaspoon for large dogs;
- brewer’s yeast, rich in B vitamins , 1 capsule per day;
- vitamin CÂ 250 mg / day for dogs up to 20 kg, 500 mg / day for larger breeds.
