What is cat and dog laryngitis
Laryngitis is inflammation of the larynx . The larynx is responsible for the emission of sounds because it houses the vocal cords inside.
Symptoms of  dog and cat laryngitis
Symptoms of laryngitis are easily recognizable:
- hoarse and weak bark or meow,
- dry and irritating cough,
- difficulty swallowing,
- swelling and sharp pain in the throat.
Sometimes a fever also appears . In the presence of laryngitis, a dog or cat has difficulty in swallowing or has showy and frequent swallowing: the animal approaches food and water with desire, but gives up the first bite or the first sip or drinks too often or does marked and “empty” swallowing.
In some cases the dog or cat demonstrates a strong reaction by touching the chinstrap and coughs at every slightest stimulus . Opening the jaws (not all are cooperative, however) you can see the red throat, with or without plaques, sometimes excoriated, the tonsils more or less inflamed or infected.
Dog laryngitis: natural cures and remedies
Laryngitis, or inflammation of the larynx, is a more common problem in dogs than cats . The dog can suffer from laryngitis following excessive and prolonged barking (for example if he does not like to be left in the house alone) or from a cold.
If the ailment is occasional and is not of a different origin than the cold stroke, natural remedies can be used. To prevent laryngitis in the winter, the dog can be given the glycerine macerate of Rosa canina : 10 to 40 drops according to the size, once a day for 20 days a month. The drops can also be put in food, but it is better to give them directly in the mouth diluted in a little water. Rosehip has anti-inflammatory and immunostimulating properties .
To treat laryngitis already in progress, the following herbal preparations can be used:
- Propolis: to alleviate the pain, administer a teaspoon (or tip of a teaspoon) of honey in which purified propolis has been dissolved for internal use (3 drops per teaspoon) several times a day. Propolis has an emollient, calming and disinfectant action.
- Erisimo: it is useful in the presence of aphonia to recover the “voice”. Prepare a decoction, filter and allow to cool. Since it is not very popular with the dog, it can be given in teaspoons or with a syringe without a needle, in small quantities, several times a day.
Cat laryngitis: natural cures and remedies
For the cat, the main cause of laryngitis is the cold stroke and to prevent it, especially in the winter period, you can give the cat the glycerine macerate of Rosa canina which has anti-inflammatory and immunostimulating properties: from 10-15 drops, once a day for 20 days a month. The drops can also be put in food, but it is better to give them directly in the mouth diluted in a little water.
If laryngitis is already in progress, however, phytotherapeutic preparations based on propolis can be used , to alleviate the pain (a teaspoon or a teaspoon of honey in which 3 drops of purified propolis have been dissolved for internal use, several times per day).
Even a decoction based on erisimo can be useful to recover the “voice” in case of aphonia. Since the decoction is not very welcome, it can be given to the cat in teaspoons or with a syringe without a needle, in small quantities, several times a day.
