Someone may not even know that there are several sandboxes for the needs of their furry friend. This is partly because about 95% of the tons of cat litter produced are of mineral origin , and are certainly not environmentally friendly. 

Among white pebbles all the same, fragrant agglomerations with exorbitant costs, silicon or gummy and magical pee catches, there are also ecological and totally biodegradable  sands or cat litter .

But how to juggle the various types that exist on the market? Here is a list that can help you choose the cat litter that’s right for you!

Natural plant fiber litter 

100% compostable and biodegradable, the litter with natural plant fibers is ecological and absorbent. It can even be disposed of in the toilet drain and is light and soft on your cat friend’s paws. This type of litter, once the “ball” of the daily discharge has been eliminated, can last up to 3 weeks.

Some of these vegetable litters are also designed for other animals, such as rodents and birds , and can be naturally scented (lemon for example), be clumping or not.

Litter with cereals and natural yeasts 

The totally vegetable litter can also be obtained thanks to the processing of inedible parts of the barley ; natural yeasts are also added to the cereal , which reduce unpleasant odors . For the same purpose, there are ecological bedding that even contain probiotics . 

This litter box is also not tough, it does not stick to the cat’s paws, it is not heavy to carry and it does not damage floors. 

There is also a type of cat sand in biodegradable corn , this can also be thrown down the toilet, dissolves in water and absorbs odors well. 

Litter from paper, wood and cellulose

Some bedding is made from good quality recycled paper or pulp. The effectiveness is guaranteed and, as for the other litter boxes, we always proceed by filling the tray for at least 5/7 centimeters.

The litter made of wood or wood pellets – certified free of solvents, pesticides or bacteria – is very absorbent and has an even greater yield than other litter boxes. Having a high absorbent power, it does not require additional fragrances. 

Costs? Ecological cat litter  boxes cost an average of 4 to 6 euros per bag of 5/6 liters . 

Curiosity: in some cases, even the bags and cartons of packaging and containment of the litter themselves are made with recycled materials and printed with water-based paints!
