Delicate topic dedicated to our male friends that of prostatic hyperplasia or hypertrophy . Delicate because men often struggle to talk about it and although they may notice some changes, they postpone the time to tackle the problem.

There is a nice commercial that shows us the thousand excuses that a gentleman can give to justify the manifestation of some symptoms. But let’s see better what it is.

Symptoms of an enlarged prostate

First of all from the age of twenty-five, dear gentlemen,  the prostate progressively continues to enlarge , imperceptibly but constantly. This means that at a mature age around 50/60 years it is natural, indeed physiological, that you pass from imperceptibility to the awareness that change is taking place, so do not worry, talk about it quietly with your doctor.

What happen? When the prostate enlarges and reaches dimensions greater than the space assigned to it , it compresses the walls of the urethra, reducing its environment.

Often in conjunction with this event, the walls of the bladder thicken due to physiological maturation, so they struggle to contract and relax to encourage complete urination.

The symptoms that signal an enlarged prostate are :

> The need to urinate frequently , even at night, interrupting sleep;
> an urgent stimulus , with a rather weak flow;
> urinary retention ;
> incontinence  –  in the case of elderly people with stiffening of the bladder;
> pain when urinating .

It is always good to undergo a specialist visit and check the PSA values with periodic blood tests, because sometimes important pathologies of the prostate can occur and the symptoms are very similar.
