Labyrinthitis: causes, symptoms and treatments
Vertigo, nausea and dizziness: it could be labyrinthitis, an inflammation of an inner part of the ear that gives rise to these and other symptoms: let’s discover the causes and treatments of this disorder
Let’s find out what are the therapies for labyrinthitis , that inflammation of the ear also called internal otitis that gives rise to dizziness and other symptoms.
Let’s see how to recognize and treat it, understanding its causes.
Symptoms of labyrinthitis
The main symptom attributed to labyrinthitis is dizziness : inability to maintain balance , feeling of falling or stumbling.
Headaches, nausea , often tinnitus and anxiety are also accompanied by dizziness ; while some are direct consequences of vertigo, others can also arise independently of the vertigo itself.
The feeling of pressure in the ears, the pain and the alteration of the normal hearing ability are also symptoms that can be consequent to the labyrinthitis.
A medical consultation is necessary to diagnose labyrinthitis and it is however difficult to determine from a single symptom, among those listed above, that you are suffering from labyrinthitis.
The most frequent causes of labyrinthitis
The causes of labyrinthitis can be due to bacterial or viral infections of the upper respiratory tract, such as colds, bronchitis, common flu affecting the respiratory system, or the ear itself, such as repeated ear infections. Sometimes it can be caused by meningitis.
In some cases, labyrinthitis is a consequence of factors of extreme psychophysical stress , head trauma and allergies to food, pollen or drugs.
An altered blood pressure can also cause changes in the pressure inside the ear and therefore lead to the development of symptoms of labyrinthitis.
Labyrinthitis can also be a symptom of cervical problems

Let’s find out more about the anatomy of the ear
The anatomy of the ear consists of three main parts : outer ear, middle ear and inner ear.
The external ear comprises the pavilion and the external acoustic meatus, that is the cavity in the temporal bone through which the acoustic waves are conveyed to the middle ear.
The middle ear is a small cavity filled with air, also located in the temporal bone, which includes, within it, three ossicles whose function is to transform sounds into vibrations and transmit them to the inner ear.
The inner ear is made up of a bony labyrinth located deep in the temporal bone, behind the orbital cavity. The bone labyrinth is filled with liquid similar to plasma and in it, in addition to other bone chambers, is the membranous cochlea: the latter contains the acoustic receptors. When the area of the inner ear called the labyrinth becomes inflamed , with damage to the vestibular system, labyrinthitis is generated , also called vestibular neuritis or internal otitis .
The functions of the ear, in addition to those of perceiving sounds , also include those of regulating static balance and dynamic balance . The receptors responsible for this role are found in the inner ear and are collectively called the vestibular apparatus .Â
