Until now we only knew that the external processor of the PlayStation VR was about the size of a Nintendo Wii and that its purpose was to do additional calculations to the console to manage the headset, but not much else.

PlayStation VR

More detailed and accurate information about the PlayStation VR’s external computing unit emerged yesterday. The physical dimensions are 140x140x35mm . The Nintendo console, on the other hand, measures 215x157x44mm and is therefore approximately 2.2 times larger . The kit includes an external 12 volt and 3 amp power supply .

The external unit is connected on one side to the PS4 and on the other to the viewer. It has inputs and outputs (for the ” social screen “) HDMI and USB ports, and finally an output for the power outlet.

The image below shows the external processor in question.

As you have certainly noticed, this external unit turns out to be larger than the one that was joined to the first example of the VR announced some time ago, and the reason why Sony has taken this path is soon said. Sony has decided to adopt an OLED panel with a refresh equal to 120 hertz . However, we know that the PS4 is capable of outputting a 1080p120 signal on “native software”, which makes us wonder: what is this external drive for?

A plausible reason could be hidden in a possible function that manages the ” social screen ” through the HDMI output. Such a feature would allow others in the room to view gameplay on an HDTV screen.

In addition, with the move to 120 hertz , Sony has implemented ” asynchronous time-warp “, which allows games set at 60fps to run at double the frame rate (120fps). This algorithm also aims to reduce the potential effects of nausea due to movements made with the headset, and significantly reduce latency.

Finally, we know that the external unit is constantly cooled by a 25mm fan and that therefore under the body there is the presence of high-frequency chips, which, as you well know, generate a lot of heat. But be careful : the graphics calculations for the PlayStation VR are entirely managed by the PS4, so this external processor does more of a finishing job than of raw power, guaranteeing developers more than adequate hardware resources, as well as providing an experience. all in all better.

No information is known about the launch price of the PlayStation VR yet.
