How to activate the multi-device function on WhatsApp for the first time
If you have decided you want to use WhatsApp on two or more devices, the first time you must proceed with the activation of this new “beta” function. To do this, proceed as follows:
- Open WhatsApp and go to “ Settings / Other options “.
- Click on ” Connected Devices “.
- Click on “ Multi-Device Beta “.
- Click ” Ok ” on the ” Try New Enhancements ” screen.
- Open WhatsApp Web on your computer (the site is web.whatsapp.com)
- Scan the QR Code .
Done! Now, next to the item ” Multi-device beta ” you will no longer see the words “you have not joined” but “you have joined”. You can start using WhatsApp on this second device without having to connect to the Internet every time (as it was mandatory to do before with WhatsApp Web).
If you want to use WhatsApp on a third or fourth device as well, repeat the procedure of steps 1 to 6 on the new device you want to connect.
NB The first time you use the multi-device function, both the phone and the second device must be connected to the Internet. After that, you can also leave your phone at home and use WhatsApp directly from your computer.
Details on WhatsApp’s multi-device function
There are a few things you may find useful to know about WhatsApp’s multi-device feature.
The first is that if you don’t connect to a device you’ve added for more than 14 days, it will automatically be disconnected. To reuse it you will have to repeat the pairing procedure.
The second is that when you connect a new device, you will receive a notification on your smartphone (like the one you see below) notifying you of the new entry. This is very useful to defend against those who want to try to spy on WhatApp using this function.
Finally, the third is that you can disconnect devices at any time ! Just go back to the settings, access “Beta Multi-device” and disconnect the device you no longer want to use.
