Does green coffee speed up the metabolism?
Today I’m talking about green coffee . Is it true that this particular variety of coffee accelerates the metabolism?
And where is it? How is it prepared?
In the past I have written two articles for two different sites on green coffee, in the last few years: it is around 2010 that I first reported it on another nutrition site. Subsequently, the boom of this food broke out, which we find in extract as an ingredient in many supplements and products for weight loss.
But it works? What are its advantages over traditional coffee?
Green coffee: does it accelerate the metabolism?
From its debut in the world of wellness, there was talk of green coffee as an exceptional drink , capable of literally melting the extra kilos, even two or three kilos a month, because it accelerated the metabolism, if consumed daily. It was said to make you lose weight and stimulate your metabolism much more than regular coffee. Coffee, as you know, as it stimulates the nervous system, also stimulates the metabolism.
The difference between green coffee and regular coffee does not lie in the caffeine content, but in an antioxidant substance, chlorogenic acid, which abounds in the green variety of coffee.
A 2010 meta-analysis found nearly 1,500 studies on his extract. 99.9% of which, however, had not been conducted according to adequate scientific criteria. For example, the participants did not measure the initial weight. The doses of coffee were not clarified by the researchers. The results were not compared with a sample of individuals who used a placebo instead. Really gross errors, which invalidate the results of these researches, given that a suitable methodology was lacking.
Only three studies deemed suitable were left to scrutiny by the meta-analysis researchers. For a total of 140 participants involved.
This alone should make us reflect. The subjects had a non-standardized green coffee extract (therefore the quantities are not known), and the weight loss was around 2 kilos on average.
Also for this reason, EFSA, the European food safety authority, has concluded that the effect of green coffee on weight loss is not relevant, so much so that it can sell the extract as a slimming product.
This coffee therefore does not make you lose weight or would make you lose very little.
