Plastic surgery abroad: medical tourism wins
If you happen to go by plane, do not be surprised that in the magazine you will browse on board, it is about all-inclusive trips to get your teeth, nose or face lift done. Plastic surgery abroad has been the new frontier of tourism for some years : in a single package you can find yourself with flight and transfer to the clinic, fixed intervention, observation day and return home. Prices? Much more accessible than those at home, and not just for Italians. In practice it is a low cost surgery.
Even the French, English and Germans fly to get the touch-up in the short trip .
The most popular interventions are the least invasive ones: interventions with fillers, for example, blepharoplasty, face lifting, dental interventions. The most popular countries are, needless to say, the poorest: Eastern European countries such as Poland or Hungary, or North Africa, for example in Tunisia.
Half-price or discounted surgery can also be found a little further away , for example in Thailand or South America.
But what are the risks of plastic surgery abroad? First, there is no certainty of adequate hygiene procedures. Risks of hepatitis and other diseases are around the corner if hygiene is not documented. Second, there is no certainty of professionalism and an adequate healthcare environment. Which professional are you relying on? What will happen in case of complications?
And what and how much will you pay to run for cover if the intervention does not go as hoped?
This is why surgical tourism is not recommended : low cost surgery abroad may cost half, but health is priceless.
