Is the fat-free diet useless?

engliahmuffinWe have believed for years that saturated fat was evil , and that a fat-free diet was the only solution to fight cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood, prevent cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome. For some years, however, there has been a clear countertrend: suddenly or almost the studies carried out since the 1970s on the consumption of saturated fats in the diet and cardiovascular health (1977 Dietary Goals for the United States), studies that have influenced the way of thinking dieticians and nutritionists as well as our doctors (as their study texts and many publications were based on these studies), may not be as reliable.
Why not, there would be no cause and effect relationship between the consumption of saturated fat in the diet and the development of cardiovascular disease, hypercholesterolemia and high blood triglycerides . This is established by an international survey conducted by the University of the West of Scotland, which examined both the way in which these studies were conducted (the choice of the sample, the observation time, etc.) and the way in which in the end data was collected and analyzed. The survey revealed the following:
– a fat-free diet does not bring particular benefits in terms of cholesterol and cardiovascular health.
– as many and better health benefits have been obtained by reducing the intake of sugar and salt in the diet in patients with cholesterol and triglyceride problems.
A fat-free diet would therefore be useless if we do not change the sugar and salt intake of our daily diet.
