7 false things about obesity
Many things are said about why you get fat.
But there are 7 false things about obesity that will perhaps help you better evaluate this problem.
When I put on more than 30 pounds , going from a normal child to an obese child, mocked by everyone and a victim of bullying, most of the doctors I met in those years told me that I was a big eater .
Now, imagine a normal-weight eight-year-old girl who one day according to the doctors gets out of bed and starts eating three times what she ate the day before and so on for a year.
Thirty kilos a year is a lot, guys.
This little girl must have gone crazy, eating about three thousand extra calories a day.
Now that I know a lot, I also know that the chance that I had gained so much weight because I was suddenly greedy was less than one in ten.
A quick calculation was enough to understand that a nine-year-old girl who goes to school, studies, does gymnastics 3 afternoons out of 7 and other children’s activities (I watched TV only in the evening), has an energy requirement of 1800 calories a day.
But it was the 1980s , and according to doctors, obesity was undoubtedly caused by a daily calorie surplus.
Which led to my first diet alone at ten and losing 30 pounds in about 2 years .
A 1200 calorie diet, which has ruined my health for a lifetime to come.
Sure, I’ve lost weight.
But do you know how many more years it took to remedy that first, tragic mistake?
About twenty five.
- Now, if you too, like those doctors, think that obesity is always a matter of gluttony, these seven scientifically proven false things about obesity will show you that the reasons why you get fat are many, and not strictly related to gluttony. And maybe this can help you:
- to better identify the problem
- to ask for more qualified help based on your problem
- not to believe that you are monsters or that you eat badly
- to make you the right expectations on how a balanced diet and exercise can help you with a view to a wider intervention, and not just as the only two variables to consider.
