The McDougall diet: the Starch Solution method for weight loss

As you may know, the Mediterranean diet includes half of the daily requirement and more from carbohydrates but also a good share of fat, which is around 30%. But if you want to lose weight, fats and carbohydrates do not mix together.

Both provide us with energy, but in the presence of carbohydrates, fats tend to be stored more easily as an energy reserve.
In fact, for the same number of grams compared to carbohydrates, fats provide more ATP: in other words, they are more caloric and tend to be more easily stored.

It is not a problem if we are on a low carbohydrate diet , but it could have health consequences if we keep it going for months or even years. It becomes a problem when we eat more than half of our daily carbohydrate requirement.

This means that the weight loss approach can be of two types.

  • Focus on carbohydrates and reduce fat.
  • Or on the contrary, drastically cut down on carbohydrates and eat a lot more fat.

If you notice, the diets that are in vogue today involve one or the other approach.

Dr. McDougall was among the doctors who pointed out the limitations of a modern diet: foods rich in sugar but also in too much fat in our diet cause disease and overweight.

Today we see the McDougall or Starch Solution diet.
A high-carbohydrate diet that prompts the body to attack fat stores that we don’t supply it through food, except in minimal quantities to absorb fat-soluble vitamins.

The McDougall diet is in fact a vegan diet based on  whole foods, legumes, tubers, fruit, very few fats but not from direct sources (excluding oils), and a reduced or no content, if possible, of animal proteins.
It can therefore also be done in flexitarian mode: for example with a portion of fish and one of meat or eggs weekly.

Many people have lost weight thanks to this McDougall diet, also called The Starch Solution method: created by Dr. McDougall, physicist and nutritionist, the diet is based on these principles.

MCDOUGALL DIET: THE PRINCIPLES OF THE STARCH SOLUTION

  • Fats actually make you fat.
  • For a good metabolism and optimal health, carbohydrates should be privileged, not limited, as long as they come from healthy sources.
  • Carbohydrates do not cause diabetes or overweight: it is easier for the body to convert fat into body fat than carbohydrates, especially if we keep an eye on their glycemic load.
  • Ancient civilizations had a high-carbohydrate diet. the Maya cultivated corn and beans, the ancient Egyptians ate bread, barley and legumes, even the ancient Roman soldiers preferred periods of vegetarian diet .
  • There are tribes that do not have modern diseases and eat carbohydrates for up to 75% of their diet.
  • People do not gain weight from genetic problems, but from diet.

McDougall has been successfully applying his method for 50 years to patients suffering from metabolic syndrome, diabetes, overweight. Everyone loses weight and is healthy again.
