The DNA diet: here’s what you can find out to lose weight

The book by Dr. Damiano Galimberti , dietician and nutritionist, or ” The Dna Diet “, has been released for Harper Collins, based on the slogan: Eat right for your genotype , or Eat right for your genetic makeup. According to Dr. Damiano Galimberti, a diet for everyone does not exist: there are those who eat more fat and fewer carbohydrates will have perfect health, those who eat a lot of carbohydrates and less fat will tend to have fewer health problems and stay fit, those who succeed with small meals, those who need to eat little but abundantly, those who need to eat more proteins, those few. Sometimes the key to weight loss lies in small details that work on the individual, but that’s not just universal rules. Of course, calories count, and this is what science says: but if you put the wrong fuel, you risk making unnecessary sacrifices to lose weight, when once you understand what your genetic characteristics are, you can set up a more effective meal plan.

THE DNA DIET: WHAT DO WE DISCOVER WITH DNA TODAY?

Although she is skeptical about what DNA can say about us today from the food point of view (a skepticism that is based on having read the opinions of experts regarding the phenomenon of genetic diets, as in the case of Dr. Ordovàs ), last year one study  published in Genetics spoke of new possibilities in the field of genetic diet : a group of mice was divided into 4 sets based on genetic differences, and all were given weight loss diets. In one case, for example, mice from one of the groups were shown to have liver problems with the Okinawan diet, generally considered one of the healthiest in the world.

DNA test can tell us for example how to divide the diet into the right amount of carbohydrates, fats and proteinsWhich is no small feat, given that these percentages are the second most important factor after calorie control for weight loss. Another thing that DNA can tell us according to our current knowledge is whether we are sensitive to a food or deficient in a particular vitamin or mineral salt, such as calcium, or if we have problems with certain enzymes. And without a doubt, it can tell us if we are predisposed to some food-related diseases, even if not all: we may not know, but our body reacts badly to foods that contain too much cholesterol. Or paradoxically, a plate of pasta can create more weight problems than a plate of fruit. A reporter doing a DNA test found for example that she should have eaten more carbohydratesand less fat: but for years he followed a low carb diet, in fact obtaining few results.
But let’s get back to Dr. Galimberti’s DNA diet.

DR GALIMBERTI’S DNA DIET: THE GENETIC TEST
The book by Dr. Galimberti therefore explains how it is possible to customize the diet based on current knowledge on DNA and proposes a genetic test, that of the Italian Anti Aging Doctors Association , to help us discover the keys to weight loss and well-being that only our body has. Through the genetic dietary test, we read, the impact on the organism of food and nutrients is assessed  with reference to one’s DNA.
