Origins of the Persian cat

In many texts the Persian cat is defined as an artificial breed , created by selection from the Angora Cat . In fact, in 1600 numerous specimens were imported from Asia Minor to Europe and subsequently crossed with a breed from Iran, smaller in size and with long hair.

The result of a perpetrated selection is the Persian, much appreciated for its beauty , so much so that it was welcomed at the court of Queen Victoria.

Morphology of the Persian Cat

The Persian Cat can weigh around 5 kg, and in summary we can define it as an “all round” . The muzzle is rounded and flattened, the forehead is rounded, the skull is round, the nose flattened between large, spaced, round and protruding amber or deep brown  eyes .

The body is well structured, compact, the tail is short. The hair is dense, long, silky, the coat can be of uniform color, two-tone, streaked, colorpoint, and the allowed colors are white, black, red, blue, silver, brown, cream, lilac, harlequin.

Psychology of the Persian Cat

The Persian is the canine version of the cat . He loves his owner, he loves being pampered, he interacts with the human to find a channel of communication. It is a gentle and polite nature cat, extremely balanced. With strangers these cats show distrust, if educated to socialize they are able to establish good relationships with other animals as well.

The Persian is not a very active cat , it prefers to laze and doze, therefore suitable for living in an apartment, without any space problem.

Cure of the Persian Cat

The Persian Cat requires daily care , starting from the hair; as it is very long, it must be brushed daily, to remove dead hair that could cause the cat to choke when it licks to clean itself, and to avoid the formation of knots.

The eyes also require daily cleaning , their protruding conformation and flattened nose make them a mucus excretion channel. The Persian cat can be washed, this practice is very appreciated by the animal, like all those related to its care, since it loves to be touched by humans.

As mentioned above, the Persian is not a particularly dynamic cat, therefore it is necessary to pay attention to its diet , in order to avoid obesity problems.

When buying a Persian cat it is good to ask for the results of genetic tests, which are mandatory for breeders of this breed. In fact the Persian is subject to the Polycystic Kidney Syndrome (PKD), of an autosomal nature.
