About a year ago, a real case broke out on the web concerning one of the latest video cards produced by Nvidia , namely the GeForce GTX 970 . Many users noticed that the GPU only used 3.5 GB of GDDR5 VRAM memory, while it was advertised as a graphics card with a whopping 4 GB of VRAM . As of February 2015, the company has been called into action from as many as 15 lawsuits filed with the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, with the affair appearing to have come to its conclusion .Nvidia

All plaintiffs , people who bought a GTX 970 , have sued Nvidia and other graphics card manufacturers including Asus , EVGA and Gigabyte accusing them of lying about the hardware specifications of the aforementioned card . Their complaints focus on the following points:

  • The GTX 970 was marketed as a card with 4GB of video memory, but in reality, as Nvidia itself stated months later, the card is equipped with memory split into two partitions: a 3.5GB, while the the other 0.5 GB is much slower and is detached from the main RAM. This caused several frame-rate problems with many titles.
  • The GTX 970 was marketed as a GPU with 64 render output processors, while the card actually has 56.
  • The GTX 970 was released as a card with a 2048KB L2 cache, while the actual cache capacity is 1792KB.

According to what reported by Polygon , the proposed solution would be to compensate customers for their problems . According to the documents, Nvidia  would not admit any wrongdoing, but agreed to pay $ 30 for each GTX 970 . Unfortunately for us, this will only affect US residents or entities who have purchased a GTX 970 in the US from any authorized dealer. It will be possible to apply for a refund until 24 August 2016.
