Is it possible to eat before diving?
For those who are new to the world of diving, it may be useful to know how long before you can eat before diving, but also which foods to prefer and which ones to avoid.
Together with the Life Academy professionals who offer the best diving course in Udine , we will see how to deal with this issue.
There are not a few divers who, in anticipation of a dive , decide not to have breakfast in the morning because by doing so they have the sensation of being more responsive and lighter.
However, this is a serious mistake that should not be made, especially since every dive involves a significant calorie expenditure , due to the energy that is burned to keep the body warm.
Moreover, we must not forget that the movements that are carried out under the water require a higher physical effort: for this reason, among the foods that must be favored by divers are those with a high content of proteins, nutrients which are essential both to ensure proper muscle function and to rebuild mass.
So what should we eat for breakfast ?
The advice is to favor yogurt with cereals, also choosing toast with some fruit or, alternatively, eggs.
All these foods ensure a consistent energy supply , and therefore provide the calories necessary to be transformed into energy.
Obviously it is advisable not to exceed, especially for what concerns the proteins, or the risk that one runs is that of undergoing a phenomenon of dehydration.
The daily protein requirement to which you must adhere is equal to 0.8 grams per kilo of weight: exceeding this limit is not recommended, also because a more abundant breakfast than necessary can cause seasickness in subjects with a little weaker stomach.
The importance of liquids should not be overlooked : water is fundamental, but fruit juices are also good. If possible it would be advisable not to drink orange juice, which is characterized by a certain acidity which, even in this case, could be problematic for the most sensitive stomachs
Between one dive and the next it is not bad to indulge in a snack , provided that you wait for at least two hours after eating: the body, in fact, does not have to go underwater if it has not yet digested.
There is no risk of congestion for a snack, but certainly if you dive immediately after consuming it you can feel cramps, if not even a state of general malaise.
So what are the most suitable snacks besides bars?
As for breakfast, fruit and yogurt are fine , along with cereals. There are those who think that the banana in the sea brings bad luck, but beyond this nice belief it is worth keeping them always on hand to take advantage of the potassium content.
Energy drinks, on the other hand, are not good, since they include superfluous salts and too many sugars. We must pay some attention, then, to alcoholic drinks and coffee, which are a source of possible dehydration also due to their diuretic effect. Finally, before diving it is good to avoid consuming milk, due to the length of the processes that are necessary to digest it, especially if it is accompanied by solid foods.
