Do I ever lose weight? The problem is called LoC
Why do I never lose weight? I diet but never lose weight. I do everything right or do like (my friend, my sister, my husband), yet I never lose weight . I go to the gym but never lose weight. What lies behind this inability to lose weight for which we often have to say (or often think) similar phrases?
Today I will explain to you a psychological mechanism that lies behind many failed or unsuccessful attempts to lose weight, even if it is not just about diet, yet it is connected to the problem of overweight and obesity.
This mechanism is called LoC, acronym for Locus of Control and represents the way in which we perceive ourselves with respect to situations or problems.
To understand how the Locus of Control works , and how it is related to your idea of ”I do everything right but I never lose weight” I will show you a recent example.
THE CASE OF SARA (OR EXTERNAL LOC)
Sara is a twenty-six year old woman who writes to me often. She has metabolic syndrome, which means she (in her case) she is overweight, she suffers from high blood sugar, high cholesterol and triglycerides. She has two small children but she does not have a job, she takes care of the house and the children. Before getting married she was already chubby, married with the two close pregnancies, she gained more than fifteen kilos. I never lose weight, she explains.
Sara went to three doctors who offered her three fairly similar diets of 1200/1300 calories. She liked none of these diets. It turned out that she:
– Sara does not want to go on a diet because she is forced to weigh and measure out food . She wants to eat the desserts she prepares and the dishes she cooks. And lose weight.
– Sara did not understand some diet recommendations: for example in one diet there was a recipe of light Parmigiana with grilled and not fried aubergines. But Sara likes her parmigiana.
– Sara says the problem is diets. There is no other way to lose weight than dieting, you ask me?
Then I explain that you can do physical activity , then contact the specialists and ask for changes.
Other problem. Sara has two children, so she can’t go to the gym. Well, that’s right.
I explain to her that she can exercise at home . That there are physical activity programs even for ten minutes, fifteen minutes, to be done every day, also designed for mothers. She tells me she has no time.
Not even ten minutes, a quarter of an hour?
Those yes, but she gets annoyed and thinks it’s useless.
In short, what does Sara want to lose weight?
Two things.
One: don’t commit.
Two: a magic. Maybe some miracle supplement that makes her lose weight by making her eat everything.
