Are you on a diet? You risk being obsessed with food
Mind you, people who go on a diet, especially women, do nothing but talk about food.
The truth is, the more we become obsessed with food, diet and various weight loss strategies, the more obsessed we become.
This is actually not our fault at all.
Dieting lowers levels of leptin, the satiety hormone. The change in this and other hormones that instead act in the intestine leads the receptors of some brain areas, including the hypothalamus , to send messages to entice us to eat. Especially highly palatable defined foods.
The obsession with food is therefore a consequence of the low-calorie diet and the resulting metabolic reduction. And alas it does not end with the diet, but much later we will continue to have the same problem. So we will talk about food, we will talk about diets, we will develop an obsession with cooking programs, with recipe blogs, with photos of dishes.
Even our senses, starting with the sense of smell, become more heated.
This happens when the body feels in constant deprivation.
RISK OF FOOD OBSESSION IN WOMEN
According to a survey, it is women in particular, also because they diet more than men, who are obsessed with food. And often, this obsession also manifests itself in front of occasional people or interlocutors. That is, they never stop talking about sugars, protein diets, yes, this no, tonight in a pizzeria, are you kidding? See you later I eat at home, this hurts, and so on.
A behavior that we women must strive to avoid and which, especially in the presence of minors, can be harmful and detrimental to them.
But, in general, it is a behavior to avoid if we are with people we do not know, and who therefore may or may not share our opinions, but who may have eating problems, acceptance problems with their body, self-esteem problems, problems with weight in turn. In short, we must try to look at ourselves from the outside, understand if and until when it is appropriate to talk about food and diet or calories or weight.
And if we do it all the time, that is an alarm bell, as I said above, that we are doing something wrong on a dietary level. That we are frustrated with our diet, that we are eating too little, that we are denying ourselves too many categories of food.
Since the obsession with food lasts longer than the weight loss diet, as Ancel Keys demonstrated in the famous Minnesota Starvation Experiment , where volunteers took months to get out of the condition of talking and informing themselves about food in an obsessive way, let’s realize that already when the what is almost beyond our control we will take a long time to get out of it.
Finally, we make our good food choices by learning not to inform anyone about their motivations. In fact, it is difficult for anyone to ask us why rice no and grilled fish yes.
We avoid informing the whole world of the fact that we are on a diet, or of how a correct diet or the choice of organic products have opened our eyes to the fact that we are what we eat and so on.
Obviously, some of these topics are important or even very important.
However, it is one thing to express one’s opinion if the situation allows it, another is to proselytize. We are not doctors, we are not nutritionists. Let’s take a step back.
In addition, people often know or have already heard all of these things. Including those who go to MacDonald’s.
